A railroad was built in 1881 along the Chisom cattle drive trail. In 1881, the railroad completed the construction of the Texas and Pacific Railway. On May 9, the first train ran, paving the way for new communities. Soon, the train station and new villages sprang up along the rail line. One of those was the city of Keller. A druggist named H.W. Black decided to put aside 40 acres for a community called Athol, which was located 14 miles northeast of Fort Worth.
