In the 1840s, settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky started settling in the area. The original settlement was around what is now Richland College. The railroad then shifted the village’s location a few miles northwest. The railroad also brought the village closer to the railroad. In 1873, the town was incorporated and was named for E.H. Richardson, a local railway contractor. The city was named for him and was reincorporated in 1908.

The city was incorporated in 1925. The first Charter was adopted in 1956 and the latest one was adopted in November 2015. As a home rule city, Richardson operates under the council-manager form of government. In the municipal elections, voters elect six Council members and the mayor every two years. The Council members representing the districts one to four must reside in their respective districts. The mayor and the other two can live in any part of the city.
