CBDV is the acronym for cannabidivarin, it is a naturally-occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa plants. CBDV was discovered in 1969 by German researcher L. Vollner. The molecular structure of CBDV is extremely similar to CBD (cannabidiol), but it has a propyl chain instead of a pentyl chain. This slight difference classifies CBDV as a propyl cannabinoid, meaning the cannabinoid contains a three-carbon side chain. Because the molecular structure of CBDV is different to that of CBD it causes slightly different effects than CBD. Both CBD and CBDV cause no psychoactive effects or make the user high.
How Is CBDV Created?
Cannibidivarin is not found in every cannabis plants, CBDV is derived from landrace Indica strains of cannabis containing higher levels of CBD than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBDV is extracted from the marijuana plant most of the time because these plants contain higher levels of CBDV. Landrace means the cannabis plant was developed in its natural habitat without being crossbred with any other plants from the same species. These plants typically originate from Pakistan, India, and Mexico.
Because landrace cannabis plants are isolated from other forms of cannabis plants to avoid crossbreeding, they are becoming a very hard plant to come by. The current legal and political landscape that surrounds landrace marijuana has made it very difficult to produce CBDV products. CBDV oil that is derived from hemp is legal in the United States, but it’s difficult to find from reliable sources.
Is Hemp Derived CBDV Legal?
CBDV in Irving Texas, derived from hemp containing no more than 0.3 percent THC is considered legal on a federal level due to the 2018 Farm Bill. This Bill gave states the power to further regulate hemp products, which some states have by restricting any traces of THC. However CBDV derived from marijuana is illegal on a federal level and is considered a schedule 1 drug by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
